August Breastfeeding Awareness Month in California

"Throughout their lives, breastfeeding can offer children protection
against serious health conditions, including obesity, diabetes and high
blood pressure." - Governor's Proclamation. There is substantial
evidence for the importance of feeding babies physiologically. Studies
have determined that breastfeeding helps protect humans against obesity.
Breastfeeding is a normal part of infancy, and enables the body's
systems to develop properly. Without this developmental stage, babies
are more susceptible not only to illnesses in infancy, but also to
chronic illness. Children who are not breastfed, and women who miss
this phase of reproduction, have a higher incidence of cancer.
Protective and developmental factors in breastmilk are lost when babies
are not breastfed. Due to the rate of illness among formula-fed
infants, it is estimated that California would save $475 million each
year even if only half of California's mothers breastfed exclusively for
the first six months of their babies' lives, as is recommended.
