I would like any available information regarding lactation and breastfeeding when dealing with pancreatitis or hopefully recovering from pancreatitis. I have had an expectant mom in a breastfeeding class I teach who has had chronic pancreatitis which by her health history appears estrogen induced. First occurrence was when she tried oral contraceptive pills a number of years ago and second occurrence is during her current pregnancy. She has severe pain and also nausea due her condition. She takes oral liquid morphine for pain and I. V. phenergan via Hickman catheter for nausea. She is also on TPN for 12 hours every night for nutrition. She is hoping that recovery after delivery will be swift and does want to breastfeeding her baby. I would like to know what special considerations need to be addressed to facilitate her success. She does realize that her baby may be born addicted to morphine and it is possible that nursing her baby might actually help with withdrawal as they both decrease exposure to this pain med with the anticipated subsiding of her pain and symptoms after delivery. I will very much appreciate thoughts the lactnet group may have regarding this special situation. Hopefully there is somebody out there who can draw on experience regarding a similar situation.
