Laura,
I am not a medical professional, but from the responses
we've seen so far, it seems that there are lots of possibilities.
As we have said so many times here before, babies don't cry
uncontrollably without a reason and it seems that the mother
and her pediatrician (and perhaps you as well) should be
working to figure out what is making this baby so unhappy.
I imagine there are any number of specialists to be brought
in a possible tests to be performed to figure out what
ails this poor baby.
In the meantime, do you have a sense of this family's
support network? Does she have family around, friends
she can call upon for support, a shoulder to cry on,
someone to help untangle all the different advice
they will be getting?

Just a few thoughts. Wish I had something more concrete
to offer.
