I attended a smoking cessation training yesterday. The presenter was Frank Vitale, from the Univ. of Pitsburgh (Department of Pharmacy). I belive he and his training are well regarded by those in that field.

In his introduction, he explained that he and colleagues developed a 10 hour smoking cessation curriculum for all collegiate pharmacy programs in the US. All pharmacists could be considered cessation counsellors, I believe, and assist customers with smoking cessation issues (pre-cognition through maintainance all the in between). They have great access to patient and in ready states of mind.

They then obtained a grant, I believe he said from the National Institutes of Health, to implement it into all the US programs. He also said that in the state of Kansas (US) all nursing schools have incorporated this 10 hour cessation curriculum.

So, it ocurred to me that this might be something for our profession to develop...one standard curriculum to be taught in all programs or schools of nursing. Clearly we would need more information as to how the pharmacy/nursing people did this...but I thought it was an effective startegy to consider. Anne Andrianos
