I want to share a short story: I walked into the hospital where I work and
one of the L&D RN's ran up to me with great excitement....She was so happy.
She went on to tell me that she had watched what I had done with a client
the week before when the baby wasn't latching "fast enough". I had the mom
lie on her side and the baby magically latched...back to story.. the RN said
since she had seen that incident, last week she had gently led several more
moms to the sidelying position after delivery and the 3 times she had done
that all 3 babies had latched and nursed happily. She went on to say how it
made her job easier because she didn't feel like she was "wrestling" with mom's
breast and babies head "making it happen". I asked her to please share what
she experienced with the other nurses on the unit. I could see her
enthusiasm, and confidence grow, as she told me how it could cut down on
time for all L & D nurses. How you don't have to make breastfeeding happen,
if you just help facilitate the bonding. The Pediatricians are happy because
the babies are eating, the next shift is happy because they don't have to
worry about getting the baby to "eat", moms are happy, and of course who
comes out the happiest...the baby of course, who has happily been nursing on
the breast for as long as he/she wants. The RN then even had to bathe a
baby.. After that, she encouraged mom to once again turn on her side and
you guessed it .. right back to breastfeeding. I can't stop all the interuptions
that take place after a hospital birth, but it is encouraging to know that
someone was watching, listening and believing in what we try to do for our
mommy's. Hopefully, others will be encouraged to do this also.... I can't thank
Jan enough for sharing this experience with me and I will keep encouraging her
to tell others. You never know what can happen when one person makes a
change....
Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays to all
Robin
