Ann and Lisa make wonderful points here, and it is very timely for me. Next week, I'll be teaching the one class dedicated exclusively to breastfeeding in my childbirth series (although, truth be told, breastfeeding comes up at least once or twice in every class because, of course, the way a mom labors and births affects the way she and her baby breastfeed). I will definitely do this little exercise Lisa mentions... what a great idea!

  Thanks!

This is one of my personal pet peeves. I ask moms in the hospital
postpartum class to raise their hands if they think they don't have
any milk yet, and they usually all do. I tell them we have done them
a disservice by labeling the early milk with this funny name,
"colostrum." It IS milk. It's the first milk, designed to perfectly
meet baby's early needs. I'd like to get rid of the whole concept of
colostrum, at least as far as what we teach parents.
