Hi all,
I have permission from mom to post this. I checked Hale and couldn't find
anything on DHEA. I can't imagine it is harmful for the baby... but I told
her I would check with more knowledgeable people than I. :-)

Thanks,
Laurie

<<My GP found that my thyroid is a little "sluggish," not quite hypo... still
in the "normal range" but borderline. (A friend of mine who has hypo-thyroid
said that it may be hypo for me, even though it's not on the charts, since I
do tend to have fast metabolism.) My GP suggested I COULD try the thyroid
medicine, but I might want to try DHEA for a week or so first. According to
my thyroid-learned friend, DHEA is a growth hormone that we all have in our
systems that peaks around 21, then gradually lessens. If it lessens too
quickly, it leaves us tired. Supplementing it will boost energy, and aid
weight loss. It's found at the health food store. My first inclination is
that it should be okay, since young women have more in their systems and
young women are better suited for having children. Could you look it up for
me in your nursing book? The full name is: (micronized)
Dehydroepiandrosterone. The GP is recommending only 25 mg per day.

If, in fact, my thyroid is hypo, I won't continue for long on the DHEA. I
don't want to mask the problem by taking a hormone other than the thyroid
medicine. But, it'll take a while to get into the endocrinologist's office,
and I'd rather a specialist monitor the thyroid meds. In the meantime, I'm
considering this to just get through the day.>>
