We have a number of methadone moms deliver each year at our facility. Most
of the moms are on 60 to 125 mg of methadone a morning so it is the general
practice to not allow them to breastfeed because of the withdrawal issues for
baby. The level 2 nursery nurses are concerned about the amount the infant
gets in the breast milk and then having mom abruptly quit breastfeeding at
home with nobody to observe the infant and having the infant withdraw at
home. The level 2 nursery nurses and the neonatoligsts tend to take over on
that issue because most of the time the infant starts in our regular nursery
and ends up going to level 2/ special care with in a day or so. It has been
so long since we have had a mom on low dose methadone that i cant recall the
last time we had a methadone mom breastfeed.

Do not follow where the path may lead.
Go instead where there is not path and leave a trail.
