Posting with permission from Naomi Bar-Yam...

Naomi and I had an off-list exchange this week about
the mechanism of change in a health care corporation.
I had posited the opinion to the list that until board
members of big healthcare organizations place true
value in breastfeeding, hospital-based lactation
services will continue to struggle with financially
related issues (staffing, supplies, staff education,
etc.).

Naomi wrote a very interesting reply about corporate
board membership with some stuff I did not know. In
brief, it is *not* a full-time job; rather, it is
usually an honorary appointment based on money
(surprise) or one's contributions to a field of
specialty. Naomi used the "three W's" and of course,
I cannot remember what they were...hopefully she can
post them here after her return to the list.

Anyway, I was thinking that many of our listmembers
would make *wonderful* contributions to hospital
boards! Can you imagine a powerful breastfeeding
advocate on the board of a healthcare organization?
Think of a LLL Leader, IBCLC, or other breastfeeding
specialist (from whatever background) sitting on each
and every board. What a difference that could make!

Just more morning musings,
Carole
