Yes, but:
Who instructed these mothers in positioning and latch, and were they
taught correctly?
Were they actually doing what they had been shown (many of my followup
lactation consults are provided just to refine skills that mothers think
they have perfected but have not.)?
Was the cross-cradle (transitional) hold the real cause of the problem?
Many clients identify the cause of their problems, some correctly, some
incorrectly.
Who was most motivated to write in (sampling error)?
What was the bias (if any) of the editor who chose the letters to be
published?

This is the difference between anecdotal evidence, and scientific
study.  Scientific studies at least attempt to control for the
confounders listed above, among others.
