Dear Peg,

My prayers are with the two year old who was diagnosed with leukemia. What a
difficult time this must be for that child and her family.

They can obtain donor milk from a HMBANA (Human Milk Banking Association of
North America) milk bank. HMBANA milk banks are the only banks, to my
knowledge, that provide pasteurized donor milk to individuals who are not in
a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The “for profit” milk banks only
provide milk to NICUs. The parents of this child need a prescription for
donor milk before they are able to purchase it. Please go to www.hmbana.org
for location of milk banks. The milk bank staff are very helpful and will
answer all of this mom’s questions.

I am not aware of any research studies done specifically on breast milk as
a treatment for leukemia, but there are many people with cancer who use
donor milk and believe that it has had a beneficial effect on their health.
Once again, you will find the HMBANA staff both knowledgeable and helpful.

All the best.

A friend/coworker of mine had just had her two year old grand daughter

diagnosed with Leukemia. They have started chemotherapy and other very

toxic treatments. Baby was breastfed for over one year, so grandma is

perplexed as to how or why she got leukemia. It has been suggested to her

(by more than one person) that they give the baby donor breastmilk. Does

anyone know if one can buy breastmilk from the milk banks for sick children

and/or if there have been any studies done on effectiveness of treating

cancer with donor milk. I seem to recall reading or hearing this somewhere,

but can't put my hands on it now.
