Hi Carmen,
This has been described in the literature. The latest term for unpleaant
effects of the let-down (MER) in some women is "dysphoric milk ejection
reflex" (Lawrence & Lawrence 7th edition, pp. 606-607). It can manifect as
nausea, headache, negative emotion (e.g. dread, anxiety, aversion). There is
a website: http://www.d-mer.org . Some years ago I described a number of
cases of headaches on let-down or in other ways associated with
brastfeeding, but this website is probably more appropiate the the current
needs of your client, and for you to bookmark for future reference.

Subject: nausia during milk letdown

I'm wondering if anyone has information on or experience with helping a new
breastfeeding mom who is experiencing an overwhelming sense of nausea during
letdown. It occurs while breastfeeding, and while pumping breasts. She
reports it has always been present, though more so over the past week or
two. Her babe is approx 1 month old now. She denies any change to her mood
during letdown, and would like to continue to breastfeed if this nausea can
be resolved, but has recently begun to decrease the frequency she
breastfeeds and has introduced formula.
Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Carmen
