A case came in yesterday of a mother with Hypoparathyroidism:
She has a 4 month old fully breastfed baby who is thriving.
She was admitted to hospital with Hypocalcaemia Tetany or spasoming of her arms. Her calcium levels were extremely low and she was ordered to wean immediately.
While I feel this was overreacting, I understand that she would need to take calcium supplementation constantly in order to keep her levels high enough to keep the tetany at bay and perhaps this is difficult?
As this is her first baby, the mother is concerned and would like to know if this will happen with the next baby (I presume it will unless she gets enough calcium).
Does anyone out there have any experience with this condition or information please?
