As regards the idea of giving bottles early to make sure baby will take one
when necessary: some thoughts on the subject: 1- the baby who has the
personality that will fight the introduction of the bottle due to nipple
preference of the breast is often the same baby who when introduced to the
bottle may then preference it over the breast and stop breastfeeding. This is
a personality issue and it is often found this childs personality dislikes
change of any kind during his growing years (and maybe his whole life). 2-
When necessary to introduce bottles, we encourage introduction about 2 weeks
before mother is returning to work (if she is not returning, we don't
encourage it ). Introduction consists of letting baby play with a bottle,
touch the nipple , smell it, and only introduce it into babys mouth when he
opens and invites it in (much as the way we introduce the breast in the early
days). We generally recommend the babysitter (or father) do this so baby
still correlates mother with the breast. Other hints are warming the nipple
to body temperature, introducing before really hungry or tired & not being in
a big hurry. Give the baby time to get used to it. Most babies can learn they
are fed from one container by dad (or babysitter) and another by mom. 3- the
issue of giving bottles to aid in daddy=baby bonding is interesting and very
recent. It has only been in the last 50 years or so that fathers fed babies.
That was a mother's job. Fathers bonded in other ways. We have such a mixing
up of roles now that I've even heard fathers ask where they can purchase
artificial breasts so they too can "nurse the baby". I expect before I die
there will be artificial wombs that fathers can carry fetuses in. And there
will probably be some mothers who will be glad of it. Oh what a brave new
world we live in.
