I've been following the whole discussion on IBCLCs and reimbursement with
enormous interest. My poor husband thought that my switching fields from
international nutrition to lactation support would pay as well as my
international work. Perhaps, since I live in Manhattan, it may be easier
than it would be in other areas of the US to make a living at it. However,
it does seem to me that having consistent reiumbursement from managed care
companies would be an enormous asset. As a psychologist, my husband has
had to deal with the issues of managed care companies and liscencing as
well. I'm curious as to what efforts have been attempted to organize in
such a way as to convince the managed care companies of the worth of
reimbursing lactation services in various parts of the country?

I see an opportunity right now in New York whereby IBCLCs could gather
together on the Women's Health and Wellness Act to include language
concerning lactation support. It did not pass the New York State Senate
this year, but next year is an election year so it might have more of a
chance. Are there other opportunities in other states?
