Hi. I'm finally joining Lactnet after all these years. For those
of you who don't know me, I've been involved in this field for many
years. 30+ as a League Leader, then as one of the first group to
sit the IBCLC exam. After returning to school to become an RN I
worked 12 years as a mom/baby nurse who tried to do LC work where
time and assignments would allow before finally getting a position
as strictly LC in January of 1998.
Anyway, to my question (yes I did try to find something in the
archives, and if I did it right, there's nothing other than a
definition). A mom reports having a painful white spot on her
nipple which fits the description often called a "milk blister".
She has no lump or breast discomfort with it, only nipple pain. She
pricks it with a needle she has cleaned with alcohol and receives
immediate relief. However, it recurs within a few days and she
repeats her treatment all over again. (Note-the pricking was her
idea, I hadn't suggested it.) Incidentally, she is nursing twins
exclusively with no other nursing problems.
I've heard of these, but usually once relieved it's over with. Any
thoughts on why it might keep recurring and suggestions for
preventing further recurrences?
Winnie Mading, RNC, IBCLC
