Dear Emily, I don't know all the ins and outs of viruses, but if mom gets a
virus then she is immune for life or in some cases for a while.  She passes
the immunity on to her baby via breastmilk. The baby may or may not get the
disease, but if baby does get disease it is usually a lighter (milder)
case.

Saw a feature presentation on PBS the other night.  It was on an Ebola
outbreak.  The local doctors (against the advice of visiting drs from CDC
etc) took blood from Ebola survivors and transfused it into one of their
sick colleagues, a nurse who was dying.  It worked, she survived.
