Rachel asked what policies others have about reuniting mothers and
babies after Cesarian births...I don't know what our written policy is,
per se, but this is my own experience, circa 1997.

Cesarian after 3 hours of pushing and no descent...in the recovery
room, I was separated only briefly from the baby while her glucose
level was checked (routine for infants of moms with gestational
diabetes). Nursing staff were very attentive. I also had my husband,
my own mother, and my wonderful doula with me. I was still immobile
from anesthesia and numb as a brick, but my doula and a nurse
log-rolled me onto my side, propped me up with lots of pillows, and my
doula and I got Emma latched. She popped off about 15 minutes or so
later, so I was log-rolled over to my other side, and Emma went to the
other boob for about another 10-15 minutes.

To this day, that first nursing is one of my fondest memories of that
fabulous day, and being flopped side to side is one of the most
humorous. Would it have been such a great experience had I not had my
doula there? I suspect I would not have had the help and encouragement
I needed had Kathi not been in attendance...

Carole
