Dear Friends,

In Finland where most hospitals with newborn care facilities have a milkbank
mothers who donate milk to the hospital are "paid". Mothers with plentiful
supply and who meet the criteria for becoming donors (non-smokers, no
medication, plus testing negative on the usual labs (HIV, B and C
hepatitis....) are given information while still in the hospital. If they
agree to become donors their milk is tested (canīt rmember the specifics),
if OK, then she is given intruction and is supplied with a pump + bottles.
She has to get the milk to the hospital, but is given about 17 euroes (
approx 24 USD) for her efforts. The milkbatches are tested for bacteria
counts rutinely. The money isnīt a salary per se, but an appreciation for
the work involved.

The NICU gets first pick (I think), but the postnatal ward use use this
pasteurized BM for about 50 % of the supplements.

Merete Willis, midwife.
