At 9 days of age, my approach with this baby would depend on the results of
the consult/assist.
That is,If the baby latches well and fairly easily with assist , supply seems
ok despite minimal emptying and parents seem to have had an AHA! moment-I
would treat like any other nursing baby that requires monitoring of intake.
Otherwise, I would definitely try a nipple shield. If parents are *at all*
skeptical about their ability to facilitate latch without assist a shield may
provide the needed crutch-even if just there as psychological backup. I have
used them quite successfully in similar situations.
