Oh, my. This mom needs to know that even the most hydrolyzed,
hypoallergenic formulas can cause reactions. For example, even if the
cow's milk protein is broken down, it may contain coconut oil, a potent
allergen, and be sweetened with corn syrup, another potent allergen. A
good elimination diet is listed in the back of Martha Sear's book of 25
Things Every New Mother Needs to Know.

My son has multiple food allergies, and there is not a single formula
available in the United States which he could have drunk. We *might*
have been able to get by with a stomach tube. Happily, he has outgrown
all but a few allergies at age 2.5, and I could eat whatever I wanted,
in moderation, and not too often, by about 15 months.

If this mom gives the elimination diet a try, she may discover that she
has a radically different, happier baby very quickly, and this will
probably be enough motivation to stay on the diet, especially knowing
that it won't be forever. If she switches to formula, she may lose her
milk supply, or the baby may refuse the breast after a week. And if
baby reacts to formulas, she could be stuck in a Very Bad Place.

Oh, and if mom has only *Partly* eliminated dairy, she might find that a
total, total elimination solves the problem, without having to give up
any other foods at all.

Lynn
