Susan,

Thanks so much for Dr. Newman's info on output (day 1-3).

I use the Righard video in my prenatal breastfeeding classes. With
all the discussion of positioning and latch-on techniques, I like to
show the other side of the coin--just how competent newborns are when
given half a chance. I usually get a lot of questions and reactions
from the expectant parents. Some are inspired; some are worried that
if they have to have a medicated birth they won't be able to
breastfeed. We discuss all of this. I

As to the content of the video -- as you said, the first baby (no
medication, no separation) is a"natural", knows just where to go and
what to do. The second baby (removed briefly, medicated birth) doesn't
have a clue. The third baby (C-section, 10 hours later) also does very
well. This raises questions about which medications cause problems, why
the C-section baby does so well 10 hours later, etc. I must get a copy
of the research itself so I can better answer the questions. But the
main reason I show the video isn't for the details of the research.
It's the overall, visual message: how wonderful and natural it is to
nurse right after giving birth. I recommend the video.

Beverly
