I have been reading this discussion on toxins with great interest. I am wondering if someone could shed some light for me. I understand that PDBEs are some kind of flame retardant chemical, but what products can we find them in? I understand that women who are currently pregnant and breastfeeding will not be able to reduce their toxic load in the short-term, but what about for the long term. My environmental awareness has grown since my triplet pregnancy in 1998. My senses became acutely aware of toxins, ie. I couldn't eat a sandwich that had been wrapped in plastic, I changed to natural/non-toxic cleaning products, etc. When two of my children developed asthma after weaning from breastmilk, I found that their condition disappeared when putting them on a whole foods diet, eating organically, limiting dairy, and getting all the trans fats, colorings and preservatives out of their diet. If we could start teaching families what products to avoid or boycott, could this make a difference for the future? Right now this PCBEs issue is nebulous in my mind because I don't know what to avoid or what to teach. I am most concerned about my daughter, who may have children and breastfeed them someday. Is there a website about what the individual can do? Obviously, restrictions need to be made at a much higher level, but how can we start in our own lives to reduce our levels?
