I don't know if this is from John Bowlby's work, but his work, and Mary
Ainsworth (who did research on "the strange situation", studying how
children reacted to strangers and stress based on whether they were
securely attached, etc.) confirms it. Bowlby's principal works are
Attachment and Loss (vol. 1, Attachment is at the origin of AP). A quick
search just turned up:
