When I first started working in a hospital back in 1987, I kept detailed
records of the babies I saw. I have looked over those records many times,
and there was no mention of babies who did not latch. I wrote about the way
babies latched if they had gotten a bottle at night ( they would not open
wide enough), or babies who would fall asleep after a few minutes, but there
were no non-latchers!!

Most births were without epidural back then. But moms got pethidine
instead.

Today, even if the birth is totally natural ( yes, it does happen sometimes
in my hospital, but most often because the moms did not get to the delivery
room in time to get the epidural), babies do not latch. One of my
colleagues thinks that it may be due to ultrasounds. Here in Israel, moms
are ultrasounded so many times during the pregnancy that we cannot even keep
track She sees moms after home births with babies who do not latch. How
can we figure that one?

Dianne, go back to animal thoughts. Are there any places where animals are
routinely fed artificially? What happens to the next generation of those
animals?

Most of the moms I am seeing today were not breastfed themselves. Their
mothers were victims of the rampant misinformation which was given back then
( which I did not understand because I did not understand Hebrew when I had
my first baby.)

And this brings me to the next baffling question: why are we seeing so many
posterior tongue ties? Could this be the reason babies are not latching?
