Recently I was called to pediatrics. Mom had delivered three weeks before,
breastfed for a week or so, and had stopped nursing 10 days before because
she felt it was too much to deal with a newborn and an 18 month old (who by
the way had nursed 9 months). Baby #2 had begun vomiting and an xray showed
he had pyloric stenosis. He was NPO for surgery, and one of the pediatric
nurses had suggested that he would recover from surgery more quickly if he
had breastmilk to drink. I was called in to see if we could pump and get
some milk for the baby. Mom said she thought she may have some milk still,
because she leaked a bit. I tried to be optimistic and tell her that it may
take a while to get her milk built up, but we could see if we could get a
bit with the double pump. I held the baby and she pumped- after 10 days of
no nursing or pumping, she easily pumped 9 ounces of milk. Wonders never
cease. And she was able to keep on producing that amount from then on.
