Dear friends,
I think part (or most) of the problem of ''to burp or not to burp'' has to do with not being in sinc with what it's about being a mammal. ''Other mammals don't burp their babies'' as one of you wrote and I'd add: and they don't put them in alle kinds of odd positions like flat on their backs. Most other mammals have their youngs stand upright (well, their way of upright on all fours) or tummy down to feed. And guess what: that's the way the food passage ways are built to have the smoothest flow.
Even if it seems that sleeping on the back prevents cot deaths (for babies left alone to sleep), laying on the baclk is a very non-physiologic position for any mammal, and potentially dangerous.
