I just finished Amy Tan's 'The Bonesetter's Daughter' (which I loved) and
found a couple of references to lactation. One was when a Chinese woman was
disclosing a theory she and other Chinese women had about why the European
women they encountered had such large breasts. Their 'udders' were
attributed to the huge amounts of cows' milk consumed by the Europeans.
The European women in question were mature and did not seem to have
children, BTW.
