Mom had a third C-section birth, first two children had short nursing
experiences due to various problems. Mom is more determined this time. Five day
old child, mom has scabs on the tops of both nipples. After nursing, her nipple
emerges curved upwards. It is erect but the tip is curved upwards. The baby had
some pacifier experience in the hospital until the mom discovered it and stopped
it.

During this time of moderate engorgement and coming home from the hospital she
is sensibly doing the right comfort measures. I watched the baby nurse while mom
and baby were lying down and things looked alright except for the appearance of
the nipple after nursing.

Could this be the back of the baby's tongue pushing up? Can someone explain
about the suck training one does to correct that? I will refer her to a local LC
if she needs to learn to retrain but I would like to learn to better diagnose
and understand appropriate therapy.

Thanks,
