Hi Harvey, nice response to the colic question. I would disagree with the
data about 1 in 5 babies having true "colic" but I sure agree that a lot of
new moms are not given any good tools to deal with their babies' needs. My
impression is that hunger and the need to be picked up and cuddled are often
misinterpreted as "colic." I can't tell you how many times I have received
a call from someone saying, "Every time I put him down, he starts crying!"
I ask, "Will he nurse?" and the answer is always "Well, yes . . ." If
only there were more support for cuddling and nursing on a baby's schedule.

The GI doc who recommends switching from breast milk to artificial milk is
ignoring basic science and endangering the health of babies: Find the
offending allergen in mom's diet and eliminate it rather than losing the
incalculable medical benefits of breast milk. Lazy, lazy doc. I also
think that it might take two weeks or more off dairy (maybe eggs, nuts, soy,
wheat, too) before mom's milk is "cleaned up" and less offensive to the baby.
