Barbara Wilson-Clay writes:
"Consequently, poor feeding should really include some observation of
respiratory performance. I find that respiratory compromise (sometimes
secondary to swallowing dysfunction) is an underrecognized cause of babies
who are gaining poorly."

I have found this to be true also, I have also seen it with babies with
previously undiagnosed cardiac problems and neurologic disorders- it is
very easy to use a finger or toe monitor and watch O2 saturation levels
during a feed. I recommend monitoring when there is particularly noisy
feeding and where baby seems to release suction in order to take a breath.
Isn't it amazing how these things all work together. Cathy Liles
