Larry Kotlow, DDS, has this to add:

If tongue-ties and lip ties were properly diagnosed in the first place, the
waste of money paid to those individuals who cannot properly diagnose the
most commonly found cause of breastfeeding issues would easily pay the cost
of a frenectomy. I hear about mothers having MRIs, infants on medications,
visits to a series of medical specialists all due to a missed tt. $1000 of
dollars ,if not more wasted dollars. It is easy to criticize the cost of
the surgery, but as stated overhead of employees, the cost of equipment and
most importantly the skills and knowledge that it takes to understand how to
diagnose and properly treat oral problems all part of the fee structure.
Redoing someone else's prior care is also a factor. If done properly it
takes a minimum of 60-90 minutes of my office time to compassionately talk
to distraught , upset parents. Discuss informed consent and how and why the
procedure will most often help, Then it takes time to go over post surgery
treatment, in order to make my surgery successful. The cost just for the
ENT and others who incorrectly place these infants in the OR is a further
waste of money. A cost of $400-$600 depending on what part of the country
you live in is not only reasonable, but when corrected early is a real
deal.. Dr.K
