Aloha,

I hope you don't mind another mention of breastfeeding in the media. I was
watching an old episode of Northern Exposure last night. This is a show that
ran in the U.S. from the early to mid 90's. Set in Alaska. To try to make
this short--Holling a 60 year old man was having an aversion to food. He
finally realized why when his wife, Shelly (18-20 years old and pregnant) was
having milk and cookies. He asked her where does milk come from. She
replied cows. Holling said--mothers. Then he said something to the effect
that milk or the making of milk is the essence of motherhood. His aversion
by the way had nothing to do with a bad mother experience or breastfeeding.
It is interesting to note that Shelly breastfed their baby for a year. Also
interesting is the fact that Shelly's character was played up as one who is
very pretty with a beautiful body--well endowed. Not to infer that
"beautiful" people don't breastfeed or "average" people do. But we all know,
many women are worried about what pregnancy and breastfeeding will do to
their bodies. She was quite proud of her body and she chose to breastfeed. I
doubt that this was a show many teens watched though. The scripting had her
getting quite large during her pregnancy as well. The birth was well done
too. At home, with the town's doctor, while the town's disc jockey was
giving a play by play to the town who were waiting downstairs in the
restaurant that the couple ran. I miss this show.

Aloha,
gloria thai
