Any help you can offer would be much appreciated in this situation:
I had a call from the mother of a 4 month old bf baby. This is her 3 bf baby
(long term nursing. Tandem nursed the 1st two).
Baby was doing fine bfing. Born at 7lbs. 16 lbs at 2 months! She denies
any "problem" with oversupply. At 2 months he received routine immunication.
Within 3-4 days she noticied small amounts of blood in his stools. This
increased over the next couple of days. Then bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and
lethargy. Several trips to the doctor later he was admitted to the hospital.
Received 2 units of blood!
During this time Mom has been carefully watching her diet. She has a very
strong history of allergies herself (corn and dairy) since early age. One of
her children has allergy to peanuts. So she immediately began watching her diet
as soon as all this began. No real benefits
First advise at the hospital was to stop bfing! "Bfing is best, but your
milk is causing this." He has been on several different formulas without good
results. Now he is on Neocate (this may not be the exact name). Doing better.
Also on "high doses of Prednisone."
Awaiting blood tests results. Every test imaginable has been done:
endoscopy, colonoscopy, etc. He is being seen by GI doctor, and Infectious Disease
doctor.
Mom is not bfing. Sometimes she pumps and lets baby comfort suck at her
breasts. "It is the only thing that makes him comfortable."
I offered her the diet recommendations from here on Lactnet a while back:
turkey, rice, zucchini, olive oil, and salt.
Her plan is to try above diet for a few days, then slowly introduce baby to
breast, and watch for changes.
Any ideas?????? (Baby dropped 3 -4 lbs during all of this)
