Hi,
>Could it be that "modern" world peoples have easy availability of milk/dairy
>products, and when these readily accessible sources of calcium are eliminated
>the typical modern/fast/junk food diet consequently lacks sufficient calcium?

I am involved in a healthy eating promotion group in my town, and our
information was that most people do not eat much in the way of
vegetables at all. Since a major source of calcium, other than dairy
products, is leafy green vegetables, peas and beans and whole grain
bread, it shouldn't really surprise us that people seem unable to get
enough calcium without dairy. In our population 75% of those surveyed
believed that canned spagetti hoops in tomato sauce was "a vegetable"
(?). We've just started the "Give me 5" campaign to get people to eat
the minimum 5 portions of fruit or vegetables a day. However, I think
the health educationalists have missed the fact that they are first
going to have to *describe* what a fruit or vegetable actually *is*, and
point out the Mc fries don't count!

I have mild lactose intolerance myself, and can only drink a small
amount of milk. Yet I have had absolutely no problems while pregnant or
breastfeeding (I am currently pregnant). I have been checked out by a
dietitian.
