My name is Jill Rabin. I am an IBCLC and pediatric speech pathologist, who
has worked for years in early intervention. I've posted on Lactnet one time
before, regarding cleft palate babies. As for the baby who is only eating
when sleeping, it very much sounds like a baby with a possible oral aversion
and sensory integrative disorder. (Barbara WIlson-CLay already stated this
in her e-mail) We would usually recommend a medical diagnostic, with a
developmental pediatrician, speech pathologist and occupational therapist,
who is certified in sensory integration. I don't have enough details about
the baby, and was interested in knowing, how it was determined that the baby
had palatal sensitivity. The reason for the baby tolerating feedings when
sleeping, may be a result of sensory overload. Many of these babies are so
overstimulated when awake, that they can tolerate oral stimulation better
when they are sleeping. Jill
