Lactnetters,
Help! I have a mom on the phone who has called to ask about
relactation. Her baby is 5 months old. She quit BF at 6 weeks old because
of a severe yeast infection that caused bleeding, excruciating pain and the
baby was vomiting blood from the feedings
Since quitting, she has tried various formulas. The baby hasn't done
well with any of them. The baby now is constantly constipated and spitty of
the formula. He's eating Nutramigen, which he reacts to the best, but he
has ezcema in several spots on his body. She says that he has stools that
are so firm they crumble and he spits up formula with every feed. Every
stooling episode causes the baby pain and tears (and mom, too). She is sick
of all this and wishes she had continued though thick and thin to
breastfeed.
She has been in and out of ped's offices. They tell her different
things each time. They prescribe meds for reflux and constipation, she
doesn't want to medicate her baby that much. Some tell her to give the baby
8oz, of water each day, some say, no. Some tell her that the baby's
epiglottis needs to mature further to prevent so much regurgitation.
She's asking about relactating. What do you think? Is it worth it at
5 months old? Or can the baby go on to other foods. She says that he eats
fruits and veg. well and tolerates them. She's been on BC pills (I wonder
if that makes it more difficult to relactate?)
AHH, I feel so bad for them!
Looking forward to hearing from you, privately or otherwise.
