Jean, I am wondering why you indicate that "side lying was not an option
post Caesarean..." when asking for ways to help moms with large breasts
latch their babies. I have found, both personally, and in helping other
moms, that it is possible to use the side lying position on day 1
post-cesarean, even when the mom (ME, for example) has large breasts.
Perhaps it also has to do with the size of the baby's mouth and the mother's
willingness to try different positions, or with the various tubes, etc.
attached to her body. I had two doulas with me as well as my husband helping
out. This did not work with baby #1 when I had no idea what I was doing
(and the hospital had no LC at that time and I had no doula), but worked
very well with baby #2 and baby #3 (especially #3). Even the nurses were
coming in to comment on how well things were going with this little one and
her willingness to open wide and latch, though she was born at 38 weeks. I
remember the first comment from one of my doulas, "Look at her huge mouth!"
I remember thinking, "All the better to breastfeed with, my dear."

So please don't give up on trying the side-lying position with post-cesarean
moms. It did not cause me undue pain or comfort to use this position.
Having lots of pillows to support my back was critical, as well as an extra
pair of hands to hold some tubes out of the way and help me get comfortable.

Subject: Large breasts

Help please....... I have been challenged recently with helping several
women with very large breasts to breastfeed their newborns...Getting both
the mother and baby comfortably
positioned was not easy. Side lying was not an option post Caesarean and
the clutch (football) hold was used.
