I'm at work so my e-mail isn't as smooth as at home and I can't compose a post
while viewing someone else's. In the Norwegian report there is a long chapter
on the ethical considerations in making recommendations about SIDS. Things
mentioned are: the potential to increase the suffering of someone who has lost
a child to SIDS, the potential to harm the health, physical and/or emotional of
others who refrain from parenting with as much closeness, out of fear of SIDS,
and the potential to save some lives as a result.
I can't possibly sum up what the ethics chapter says in the space of this post,
but I'm here to say it was one of the most important parts of our report, IMO.
The ethicist who worked with us definitely 'got it' and it was a pleasure to
work with him. It is such a different mindset from the one that makes a
blanket recommendation for some imagined audience incapable of thinking for
themselves, or making their own decisions responsibly.

When I am feeling especially uncharitable I wonder whether people who so grossly
underestimate the common sense of others, do so because they themselves have
none.
