I want to thank Pam for sending a post that started a quite interesting
thread. I sensed her frustration, and I wanted to respond from another
perspective, because there are huge cultural differences in BF patterns. I
also wanted, as a listmother, to gently remind everyone that we are being
watched, always, because our archives are open, and that's why we try to
take the high road.

All of us working with breastfeeding know how easily you can get frustrated,
and venting to Lactnet is one of the reasons people subscribe - and it makes
for some interesting posts too.

I especially like the way Pam called a spade a spade, as she saw it, and how
no one has flamed ANYONE else on the list over it. Pam, I hope you didn't
feel even slightly scorched by my post, because I think I understand your
frustration, and I certainly sympathize.

Rachel Myr,
Kristiansand, Southern Norway, where the new up-and-coming reason for not
BFing is that it's difficult after reductive mammoplasty - 5 of the 24 women
on my ward right now have had their breasts surgically altered for largely
cosmetic reasons and none seems to be about to bring in a full supply of
milk, :-(
Even here I think it would be victim-blaming to call it pure selfishness,
though ignorance of the effects of surgery certainly plays a role.
