I am a bit behind in reading Lactnet but see that this most recent call from
a mom follows one of the topics from the last month....
I had a call this evening from a mom I have spoken with a few times over the
last year concerning her 3rd baby. Her first call to me with this baby was
concerning her upcoming surgery. Several months later she called about the
baby being colicky, not sleeping well or for long periods. This baby is
nothing like her other children. We talked about a lot of the different
things that could cause baby to be colicky and restless. She does drink a
lot of milk and I had suggested that she cut the diary out of her diet to
see what happens. The next call was with the same problem. My suggestions
were the same since she didn't try it the first time. She called again at
the first of the year wondering what to do. Her baby was 12-13 months now.
He will eat very little solids if any and will nurse all night. Baby sleeps
with the parents but mom is not able to sleep with the 6-8 times of nursing
a night. She still had not tried to eliminate the diary. We talked about
trying get baby to slow down during the day and eat or nurse and also
suggested cutting out the diary for 10 days to 2 weeks.

I checked back with her a week later, she had given up on the diary
elimination, her baby was up even more during the night after just 3 days.
I suggested she read the FUSSY BABY BOOK, NIGHTTIME PARENTING, THE BABY BOOK
or learn more about food allergies. Again, none of which she did. She
called this evening asking if I had ever heard of this type of "feeding
disorder". They had seen the pediatrician last week. The baby had lost
weight and he diagnosised her baby's refusal of solids as a feeding disorder
and she was to stop all breastfeeding. This mom had been under a lot of
stress in addition to the baby only nursing. She really wants to continue
to nurse since this is her last baby but not all day and/or all night. They
stopped nursing last Wednesday. Baby has been eating much better, sleeping
better (he slept through the night for the first time last night), and been
very clingy but otherwise doing great. Mom didn't want to wean like that,
is almost over the engorgement and has cried everyday since. She also wants
to know if she can start nursing again maybe only at night.

I have never heard of a baby refusing solids as a "feeding disorder". After
reading all the posts in Dec/Jan about baby refusing solids, it just
reinforces (to me) that this child has food allergies that are still
undiscovered. Comments please.

TIA,
Deby
