<Do many of you have success with the SNS? I have few moms willing to even
try and fewer who do well with it. Rob>

For me it took a lot of playing with the sns and different cases to learn to
get comfortable with it and like it.

The sns has worked best for me in cases where it is an issue of milk supply
and the baby has an effective suck. It usually requires hands-on teaching of
use and support as mom works with it. It is a wonderful tool for cases where
mom loves the nursing relationship and it enables her to maximize
breastfeeding during re-lactation or long-term insufficient milk supply
problems.

When it is a baby problem and ineffective suck issues I have found it is much
more difficult to use and requires more adapting of techniques. I only use
it in these cases if moms are really wanting baby at breast more for feeding.
For these situations I prefer to concentrate more on milk supply support and
just keeping the baby fed until suck ability improves.

I have also learned to really like the starter sns early pp when baby needs
extra milk for some reason. However, it is best if mom and baby aren't
having a lot of latch-on difficulty or they get hands on help with it for a
few feedings as they learn to use it. Again, with pre-term babies or other
reason for weak suck it hasn't helped as well. In these cases I no longer
use it early on.
