Hi Leigh Anne,
My first reaction was 'that is ridiculous and these meds probably work
locally." But, after searching around, it is not so simple. My
recommendation is this:
this mother really needs a consultation between herself, her
pediatrician, dr. hale, and the eye dr. or some similar combination of
putting heads together.
The mother can certainly contact hale's infant risk center herself.
however, on my searching, there are so many meds, so many options for
glaucoma treatment, etc. some of the glaucoma meds do have systemic
side effects as most of the med gets absorbed systemically. I did not
search anything specific. I think the doctors ought to put their
heads together. Perhaps there are other options for this mother until
weaning.

If the eye dr did indeed say that would kill the baby, that is quite
extreme, and I believe inaccurate. Perhaps that's what the mother
heard/perceived. I'm sure it scared the hell out of her. I hope if she
has temporarily ceased bf, she is expressing and saving.
In any case, I think if she called the risk center and could keep
nursing in the very short term, and then try to get the consultation
going. I would expect this might be something dr hale would be
interested in studying (mom's milk levels, baby's blood levels)
because I would imagine this condition is relatively infrequent among
lactating women.
