Naomi asks: "... do LCs specialize. Do most communities
have enough LCs that they can afford to specialize?"

In our region (just outside Philadelphia), we have many IBCLCs in varied
practice settings. Some have earned an informal designation as
"specialists" in that they have learned a lot about certain situations, and
then *shared* that knowledge with their colleagues at the active ILCA
affiliate meetings. At the risk of offending those whom I neglect to
mention, the names that spring to mind immediately are: Kay Hoover (yeast);
Nikki Lee (cranio-sacral therapy); Diane DiSandro (corporate lactation
programs); Debi Page Ferrarello (profession-promoting practices as an
IBCLC).

One of our best affiliate meetings was: "Sharing Resources and Referrals."
I've referred to my notes from that day many times! Not only did I learn of
medical professionals to whom I might refer a needy mom, I also learned a
lot about what my IBCLC-colleagues were doing. Several of them have
received referrals from me, based upon what I learned at that one meeting.

I highly recommend this as a meeting topic for your own affiliate.
