"There was a great talk at ILCA from Dr. Bryan Vartabedian, a Pediatric
Gastroenterologist. He also wrote a book titled "Colic Solved". During his
talk he spoke of "Cow Milk Protein Allergy". This is a reaction the infant
had to the Casein and Whey the mother is consuming and then passed through
the breastmilk. "Up to 50% of babies who are allergic to cow's milk will
react to soy protein in a similar way" (Colic Solved, p117). Temporary
elimination of the cow milk proteins (Casein and Whey) from MOM'S diet helps
the infant. It takes about 2-3 weeks to fully clear."

Leigh:
I'd like to mention a possible reason why some earlier studies have cast
doubt on allergy to the mother's food in (some) cases of colic.
1. Using soy protein as a substitute in a control group (and forgetting that
soy is potentially allergenic).
2. Not eliminating all bovine proteins along with cow's milk, cheese and
yoghurt - i.e. the meat protein in beef and veal. (Who ever thinks of the
meat?) I mention this because at one stage I was having a mild reaction to
veal and beef (queasiness), as well as a clearer reaction to cow's milk
proteins, including in yoghurt, etc.
Sorry, no time to chase up the references.
I'm going "no mail" temporarily, because of lack of time. This is proving
one of my busiest years. Any messages, please copy to me privately. I look
forward to being back on Lactnet soon.
