Marguerite, thanks for doing this study and for posting its ref. But for
those of us who could get this article by dint of protracted library requests
etc but not so quick or so easily, can you tell us in words of one syllable:
what did you conclude?

Inquiring but non-med-school-affiliated minds want to know.

What we found was that a sucrose pacifier was not as effective in providing
pain relief for circumcision as the dorsal penile nerve block. However, for
those physicians who are not trained, or are otherwise unwilling, to give
the nerve block, sucrose provides some analgesia. Unlike EMLA cream, it
gives pain relief during lysis of adhesions (the most painful part of the
procedure); overall, it is probably at least as effective as EMLA cream,
which the AAP has endorsed for circumcision.
Currently, in our nursery, we give sucrose first, so the babies don't cry
when they receive the dorsal block.
Thanks for asking.
Peggy H.
