I laughed out loud at Rachel Myr's "Neither birth nor the exam date comes
like a lightning bolt out of a clear blue sky." I'd been thinking along the
same lines, with another layer.

Taking the exam is a petition to work in the paid professional world. When
I pay a professional to clean my teeth, I don't want her leaving the room to
tend to her baby until she's finished. When I pay for a professional's help
at a house closing, I don't want her showing up a half hour late because her
child was fussy. When I pay a professional to put in stitches after an
injury, I expect her full attention to the task. That's the price those
professionals have to pay in exchange for the payment they get from me. We
have a contract, to be broken only under extreme circumstances. The exam is
almost a double test: Do you have the knowledge? Can you devote the time?
