As one of a few IBCLC's in my area who recommends alternative pumping
products in an area of the country dominated by Medela, I want fellow
lactnetters to know your points are well taken. (Unless you reside in an area
like mine where "others" are almost impossible to locate except for mail order,
you might not understand the frustration of wanting to recommend another
company without the option of doing so when a pump is an immediate need)
Yes, the point is Code violation... and yes, there are pumps that can
accomplish the same end goal with a Code compliant product.
I understand now that the usefulness of the product is not in question. When
a mother is desperate and in need of a pump, it doesn't matter to her if the
pump company is Code compliant or not. It should, however, matter to the
IBCLC recommending the pump. Your points are well taken.

Would love to hear suggestions, however, on how to saturate the market in
my area with Code compliant companies. It would be helpful when there are
immediate pumping needs, as were mine and as are most of my mothers.

Angie Sohler, RN, RLC, IBCLC
