I have permission to share this nice story:

I got such a nice phone call today. :-)

About a month ago I got a call from someone who had been recommended to
call me to talk about relactating. She had been told after BF her child
for just 2 days that the medications she was on were going to "poison"
her milk and that she absolutely HAD to stop. She had been all gung-ho
about BF and became very depressed about it. It doesn't help matters
that she is bi-polar (the medications she is on are for that).

Well the baby was 2 months old when she contacted me and she still had a
drop or *2* from time to time if she pressed her nipple really hard.
That's it. I looked up the medications she is on and found Hales says
they're BF compatible. I then contacted a pediatrician who is BF
friendly to get him to talk to her about the medications. I helped her
over the phone with the how to of getting her son interested in Bf after
2 months of not BF at ALL. She got the go-ahead from the Bf friendly
ped and contacted her family physician to get blood tests on the baby on
a regular basis b/c this medication requires that while BF IN CASE the
levels in the baby's blood go up too high. BTW her family physician was
NOT the one who told her to stop Bf after 2 days in the hospital; that
was the hospital ped who she never saw again.

Well, I had phone calls from her on a daily basis for about a week,
sometimes 2-3 calls a day, lasting well over an hour often. I was
scared this was the more "manic" state of being bi-polar and that she'd
become disinterested pretty quickly. Last time I talked to her about a
month ago, she had been offering the breast several times a day, had
rented a double electric hospital grade pump but her SO wasn't sure he
was really interested in her relactating after all, the baby wasn't
CONSISTENTLY taking the breast and she wasn't producing anything yet
really except for the drop or 2 of milk. We talked about SNS/Lact-aids
or making one's own, I told her about nursing while asleep, in the bath,
offering often, going topless around the house to keep the food source
available all the time...all the tricks I could think of. Last I heard
a month ago he was accepting to nurse sometimes, but only one one side.
Then the phone calls stopped all together and I figured "she knows where
to reach me I won't pester her". Well surprise surprise I got a call
from her today: she is BF this baby, he is 3 months old, she is down to
*2 bottles* per day and sometimes fewer than that and things are going
well!!! She's on domperidone and all the herbs and stuff, but her baby
is happy and thriving and she is happy and says she's going through a
2nd baby-moon. Baby is nursing on both sides. The reason for her call
was to wonder if it was normal that her breasts feel less full now. I
mentioned he might be going through a growth spurt (3 months) and it
could work itself out very soon. I said if he was
satisfied/happy/alert/pipis ok/gaining fine not to worry for now, but to
keep an eye on it just given that she went from almost "zero milk" at 2
months to very little supplement now. I was so pleased for her that it
seems to be going well. It was really nice to have the update. :-)
She says she might come visit me soon (I haven't actually met her
myself yet).

Fio.
