This is my first note to LACTNET. Short intro: I am IBCLC,certified 4
years ago, private practice, 3 kids (13, 10, 5) -all adopted and
breastfed 4+ years each, LLL Leader for 11 years and Asst. Area
Profeesional Liaison Leader for MD-DE-DC for 10 years. Nice to meet you
all--Judy Gelman
Question: I was contacted this morning my a nurse at a local hospital
where they are using Toradol (ketorolac) for severe post-partum pain.
This is my third inquiry on this drug. The woman in question today had
a forceps delivery with tears. She received a single 10 mg dose of
Toradol. I looked in USPDI 1996, p. 1823 where it states that
breastfeeding is not recommended due to potentail adverse effects in the
nursing infant. Extremely low amounts ( 7.3 nanograms/mL) pass through
to the breastmilk and none detected in 40% of patients. THe milk/plasma
ratio is 0.037 for an single dose. SO, what's the story? Why not
breastfeed after taking this drug? What are the potential adverse
effects? If she can't breastfeed on the drug, how long should she have
to wait?
